"My favorite dreamers"

- Spencer, Lender

My name is Spencer, and I am a Kiva employee and active lender! I’m inspired by Kiva in so many ways. In my role, I’m fortunate enough to speak to dreamers.  Dreamers that have a strong passion to turn a skill into a business or something they love into a sellable product. But tremendous personal hardships have made success in business difficult.  Relentless determination is amazing to me. And the entrepreneurs I lend to or work with personally at Kiva have it.

Maritza is one of my favorite dreamers.  She’s an immigrant entrepreneur and Kiva borrower who stole my heart while helping her draft her Kiva loan profile.  As we were crafting her story, she spoke about her family, her passion for cooking amazing food, and serving her community free of charge.  Even while facing homelessness with two daughters to support, she found time to build her community and give back through her cooking.  Kiva has now opened doors for her to start her catering business, and now she’s on her way to success.

Kiva U.S. Stories is a space to share and enjoy the moving, the funny, the inspiring, stories that come from every corner of the Kiva U.S. community.

Kathinka K. Nakstad

Kathinka moved to San Francisco to pursue her BBA degree, with a major in marketing. Being form Norway, she time to time misses the different seasons (especially winters with snow). One of her hobbies consists of finding a part of a city and explore it for a whole day. Checking out cool boutiques, and the best places to eat. Two of her favorite places to visit are Budapest and Vienna. No wonder her dream job would be to travel the world and write about the places she visits.
