I first heard of Kiva after winning a business plan competition in November 2014. A member of the Kiva team was in the audience and came over to me afterwards and asked if I needed more funding. “YES!” I said, and she proceeded to tell me about Kiva. About two months later, I launched my Kiva campaign, and I was absolutely blown away and humbled by the generosity of the Kiva community! In just three short weeks, we raised $10,000 with the help of a matching loan program by Deutsche Bank– and it came just in the nick of time.
You see, inspired by my son’s inability to put on his shoes because he was in a scoliosis brace, I spent about six years developing the first fully supportive, totally hands-free operable shoes for people with physical and cognitive challenges, obtaining patents, and lining up manufacturing. My resources were almost completely exhausted, and the funds raised through the Kiva campaign provided capital at a very critical time by allowing us to start production and give us enough runway to secure further investment.
